MAINTENANCE FOR DISPOSALS:
Daily:
Remember to keep the cold water running for at least one minute
after you have turned off the garbage disposer every time.
Be very careful to only use non-caustic drain cleaners when you
clear the drain. Lye based drain cleaners can ruin the disposers
motor seals and rubber parts.
This method is not sophisticated, but it's easy oil the disposer
and pipes and might work for you, too. Pour a cup full of baking
soda into the drain. Then slowly pour in a quart of white vinegar.
Put the stopper in the drain hole and fill the sink with water.
Let stand for one hour. Pull the stopper from the drain. The water
usually flows boom, boom, bam, right down the drain.
Monthly:
A plumber friend of mine, Art Cameron, always told me that most
plugged drains could be eliminated by running hot water through
the drain for ten minutes once a month.
I recommend filling the entire disposer with ice cubes and leaving
them sit for half an hour. The cold cubes solidify the grease deposits
plugging the inner drain holes. These solid glob¬ules of grease
are then washed away when you turn oil the water and disposer.
